Early life and career [edit]

Yokota comes from the Ōta ward, growing upward in Tokyo and its adjacent suburbs of Kanagawa and Chiba, and attended Chidori Elementary Schoolhouse in s Tokyo during the early on 80's, where he played baseball. Yokota liked other activities, such equally football game and swimming, but also liked playing his father'south electric organ. Yokota started listening to Yellow Magic Orchestra in unproblematic school, and quit baseball game to accept piano lessons across the street from his house.[v] He studied for two years earlier using his otoshidama to buy a Casio MT-twoscore in Akihabara. Afterwards a couple of years, he bought a Korg Poly-800 and a cassette recorder.[7] [viii] [9] [10] When computers started popping upward when he was in centre school, he started recording tracks around 1982.[eleven] In 1983, after YMO broke up, Yokota discovered hip hop through a midnight radio program, which led him to stop using synthesizers and brand his own beats.[10] [12] He became a supporting member of Puzzle Jam Rockers and was involved in the production of early hip-hop albums such as Krush Posse and Eastward Stop while doing track making and turntablism.[7] [xiii] [fourteen]

Introduction to business firm music [edit]

In 1987, Yokota met boyfriend producer Soichi Terada when participating in a Vestax DJ Contest, where Yokota won a prize.[9] [15] [14] [16] Terada introduced him to firm music and synthesizers, even letting him in his business firm to sentinel him perform and have Yokota utilize his gear during his free time.[11] [17] [18] He began making business firm music, but said that it was difficult to find others like him since the dominant manner of electronic music in Tokyo was Hi-NRG and eurobeat.[12]

He formed the label Far East Recording with Terada in 1990.[10] [13] [19] He and Terada would put out their first album called Far Eastward Recording in 1992.[20]

Absence from music [edit]

Yokota has stated that he lost his motivation to create music due to the influx of new technology. He stated, "In the by, sampling time was express and so yous had to be really artistic when you had an idea. But with hard disk recording the possibilities were endless, and around 2000 I lost my motivation to brand music." He focused more on his custom automobile parts company, Night-Pager, that he launched in 1992. Too during this time, he raised his three children.[2] [9] In 1999, Yokota and Terada played at Guild Citta for a memorial upshot for Roger Troutman, playing "Computer Love." The outcome would be their last live before going on hiatus.[xiv] [21] In 2011, another visitor he created that sold camera parts went broke, but managed to restart his company as a producer of custom-made auto parts.[22]

Resurgence [edit]

In early 2013, a YouTube aqueduct called UtopiaSpb uploaded a rip of "Do Information technology Again," but incorrectly credited the song to Terada. While their other rips range from 1 thousand views to 9.viii thousand views, "Do It Once more" garnered more 2 million views as of June 2020.[23] Multiple users, including Terada himself, pointed out the inaccuracy, but the channel has been inactive since the upload of the song.[3]

In May 2016, he appeared in Boiler Room playing a alive set.[24] In Nov of that same yr, he released his 2nd album, Do It Again And Again, which includes unreleased songs produced in the late fourscore'due south and early 90's.[15] [13] [xvi]

Do It Again and Again [edit]

Do It Again and Again was released on November 30, 2016.[30] The anthology had a release political party at Circus Tokyo on February 25.[31] [32] [33] [34] The anthology is Yokota's first full-length solo album, with Stefan Betke mastering the album.[15] [35] Yokota described it equally "a compilation of my whole life producing" so that he could "relive 27 years of meaning memories."[10]

I Know You Similar Information technology [edit]

I Know You Like It was released on September 25, 2019, three years later Do It Again and Once more. The album includes covers of Yokota's previous songs "Night Drive" and "Shake Yours" and a cover of the song "Simoon" by Yellow Magic Orchestra.

The album received by and large positive reviews. The Record Deck rated information technology a yellowish, saying that his "melange of thin high-frequency synths and rhythm fills, comes through clearly on I Know You Like Information technology, a cheekily-titled release that will hopefully see him find a greater American audience."[36] Yellow means that it had loftier points in aesthetics and originality, but low points in intellect. This also means that it "stands out in both emotional evocation and in uniqueness."[a] At Finding Figaro, the author explains, "Information technology'due south an incredibly consistent album comprehend-to-encompass and, to my ears, already feels like a timeless classic, definitely one of the releases of 2019."[37]

Ultimate Yokota 1991-2019 [edit]

Ultimate Yokota 1991-2019 was released in October 2019.[6] [17] All songs included in the album were previously unavailable in vinyl grade. Yokota said about the compilation: "This project 'Ultimate Yokota' is a conscientious selection of tracks from the early 90's which haven't been released on vinyl e'er. It is my thirty years chronicle."[27] [38] [26] [28] The album includes six songs from Exercise It Again and Again and six songs from I Know You Similar It.

Chal Ravens of Resident Advisor said, "His ear for melody and a snappy sample provides endless diverseness, but the basic recipe tends to combine the snobby, velvet-lined grooves of classic New York firm with a sure Japanese accent—playful earworms and plasticky organs direct from an arcade game, or notes of laidback electro-boogie that make y'all want to start your engine and cruise through the neon-lit hurry of south Tokyo."[39]

Artistry [edit]

Influences [edit]

Yokota has said that Haruomi Hosono of the Yellow Magic Orchestra is 1 of his major influences, stating the he listened to YMO and Ryuichi Sakamoto when he was 10 years old. From 1985 to 1995, he listened to hip hop artists from Sugar Hill Records, Def Jam Recordings and Tommy Male child Records, and "was hugely impressed by the stuff Lil Louis was doing."[12]

Musical fashion [edit]

Yokota's music focuses on electronic and house music, including downtempo, deep house, and tech firm. His style is similar to collaborator Soichi Terada, likewise every bit Galaxy 2 Galaxy, Ata Kak, Los Microwaves, and Larry Heard. Yokota prefers a simpler fashion of music where "information technology'southward basically made up of beats and bass from the rhythm auto and vocals on tiptop."[xi] [40]
